Great website. From a starting point of knowing that my great grandmother from Bo'ness in Scotland had been born in Donegal originally and had Malseed as her middle name and memories of my grandfather mentioning "the Mulseeds and the Stewarts" a lot when I was a kid whenever he reminisced about visiting relatives in Donegal as a child (turns out there were several marriages in the 19th century between these families in the townland of Glen Upper near Ramelton including between his great grandparents Margaret Malseed and William Stewart), this website has been very helpful in piecing together my family tree in the Ramelton/Milford area of Donegal back to about 1800 or so. The branch of the Malseeds I appear to be most directly related to would be #5 (Henry 1790) in terms of this website, although the available documentary evidence gets a bit scant pre-1840. I saw a mention of Dave Gallaher the famous All Black further down. Based on my family tree, there appear to have been at least two marriages between grandchildren of Henry Malseed and first cousins of Dave Gallaher, so I suspect at least some of the people who have left entries here over the past decade or so are related to him. Can provide more details by email if anybody is interested.

i am interested in my husbands' ancestors as they carry the name malseed through the generations along with the surname cunningham. they come from ireland in the 1860 but i can only conjecture it is Donegal. Two of my names come from my uncle "Wille Malseed" who died a few months before I was born in Belfast in July 1948. His wife Georgie Malseed nee Gibson is my mother's sister. My mother's family are from Letterkenny Co Donegal and are Ulster Scots who fled to Northern Ireland at the time of partition in Ireland when the protestants believed that the new Catholic South of Ireland - Eire. Hi, I am a grandson of William John Maultsaid, born Rathmullan 1849 and died L'Derry 1902. Congratulations on your excellent website. I am interested in the comments on the origin of the Molseeds and would support the idea that the Irish roots come via a Scottish / Flemish Huguenot connection. My grandmother Nora Evelyn Maultsaid talked of the Maultsaid name as being Flemish. Perhaps her grandfather William changed his spelling from Malseed to Maultsaid to reflect the more Flemish pronunciation 'malt-said'. The 17th century phonetic spelling as Molseed would be understandable and the Scottish connection would tie in with John Cunningham of Scotland being granted Ulster Plantation lands in the early 1600's. Newtowncunningham and Manorcunningham are villages/small towns in All Saints parish. Note that Monreagh is a townland (beside Carrigans) in the next parish of Taughboyne. Monreagh Presbyterian Church dates back to 1644 but unfortunately the old records were destroyed in a fire about 25 years ago. I have heard about the reunion from Jim Maultsaid and would hope to meet you at that time, although I will not be able to make it on the 5th or 6th June. Eric Beatty

just discovered your web site, I am a great great grandson of James Malseed who died 15-3-1881 at Rathmullen and his wife was Eliza Ann Thompson born 1798 and died 28-12-1891 and are buried in Rathmullen church of Ireland cemetary. My parents were William Stewart born 13-5-1897 Myamyn Vic. died 20-12-1983 Koroit Vic.He enlisted in the army and served in France in the first world war, was wounded and returned to Australia, and settled in Willatook on a soldier settlement block. in 1921 dairy farming. and married Janet Oldman who was a bushnurse in nearby town of Hawkesdale, they were married on the 11-11-1926. They had four children, William Sydney, father of Janet who has a comment in the guest book, Pamela Jean, Douglas Richmond Ralph, and myself. regards Barry.

I am the great grandson of Rachel Malseed who married James Stewart both of Ramelton, Co. Donegal.Their first child was Robert John Stewart who was my grandfather. He married a Martha Begley and their daughter Anna Florence Stewart was my mother. She only died on the 17th September, 2003 at the grand old age of 94 years. A "johnny come lately" to the web page! My daughter just turned me on to it. It is very informative and I've already bookmarked it! As a youngster, I remember hearing from the elders that at one time our family name was Malseed but no one could explain how or why it became Molseed. Now, with your web site info, I find the name Maultsaid--interesting. I also assumed, until perusing your web page, that the Malseed/Molseed name arrived in Ireland via the Dutch connection but your information giving the inconsistencies of dates has certainly given me pause to re-think it! I know there is a Malseed/Molseed connection as both names can trace back to Philadelphia and, prior to that, to Letterkenny, County Donegal. I was dumbstruck when I opened this page out of idle interest and saw a photo of my father (Bill Malseed, now of Warrnambool) When the Malseeds arrived in Australia, Victoria was not a separate state and there was virtually nothing in the way of European settlement.My great-great grandparents were both Malseeds,grandchildren of 2 of the 4 Malseed brothers who landed at Bridgewater Bay in 1849. My grandfather came from Myamin and after returning from the 1st world war, took up a soldier's settlement block at Willatook, near Warrnambool. These blocks didn't amount to much and most left, but my grandfather stayed on and my father after him. Farming is definitely in the blood, although my brothers and sisters have chosen different careers, my 9 year old son wants to be a farmer, and my sister, Heather Fleming, now runs a farm with her husband.p.s. Our family pronounces Mal-(as in malt)seed.
